However, you get what you pay for; the higher the budget, the more features you will get on a bike. Here’s how it usually goes:

$300 to $400 Price Range

Most 24 inch bikes in this price range are built for kids who are mostly riding on paved roads. The tires are usually smooth, the seat position is upright and the handlebar is straight.

If you’re living in a neighborhood with paved surfaces or a playground where kids can play, it would make sense to choose something at this price range.

$400 to $500 Price Range

Most 24 inch bikes for kids available at this price range are multi-terrain; that means, your kid can ride it on both a paved road and a dirt road with a little bit of sand or gravel. Most likely, you will get something with disc brakes, knobby tires, a wide gear range, and an optional front air fork.

Size and Fit

Most 24 inch bikes are designed for 8 to 12-year-old kids who are between 4.0 to 4.9 feet tall. For that reason, you must consider your kid’s height; if he/she is taller than average (beyond 4.9 feet), you should consider 26-inch bikes for kids.

Other than that, you have to keep in mind that most 24 inch bikes for kids have an average inseam height of between 24 inches to 31 inches. A suitable inseam height on a bike should allow the child to step on the ground with tiptoes; this makes it easier to control and pedal the bike.

Not to mention, the best bikes for kids come with height-adjustable seats. Anything that you can adjust the seat about 3 to 8 inches above the inseam has room to grow when the child gets older. A good rule of thumb is to pick up a bike with a weight that is at least 40% or less of your child’s weight. To put it into perspective, if your child’s weight is 30 kg or 66 pounds, you should pick a bike that weighs 12 kg (26 pounds) or less.

Better yet, if your kid loves to ride on off-road terrains, you should choose a bike that is 30% or less of your kid’s weight.

Type of Brakes

When it comes to brakes, you will find 4 common types of braking systems in kids’ bikes. Let’s have a look at the options.

Coaster Brakes

A coaster brake is activated by pedaling backward; hence, they’re also called ‘backpedal brakes’. To know if a bike comes with a coaster brake, just check if it has a brake arm opposite the mounted chain on the rear wheel.

Even though coaster brakes are cost-effective, simple, and reliable, they’re not the best option if you want to teach young kids how to ride a bike. Since moving the pedal backward will cause the bike to stop abruptly, it could be problematic for kids who tend to pedal backward by mistake instead of going forward.

Not to mention, it would be difficult for your kid to balance on a bike if he/she can’t freely pedal backward. In our experience, most kids tend to fall off a bike when using coaster brakes. You don’t want that, do you?

V Pull Brakes

Otherwise known as ‘direct pull’ or ‘linear pull’ brakes, this type of brakes uses a cable and a housing system that is almost similar to cantilever brakes. Most 8 to 11 year olds’ designated bikes available on the market come equipped with standard V pull brakes. This is because V brakes are very powerful and easy to activate without using a lot of pressure.

If your kid will be riding on muddy or wet surfaces, V brakes are convenient on 24-inch bikes. Nevertheless, V brakes could add more weight to a bike compared to other types of braking systems.

Disc Brakes (Mechanical or Hydraulic)

Disc brakes rely on hub-fixed rotors to stop the wheel. Usually, there are two types of disc brakes you will find on 24-inch bikes; mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes.

Mechanical disc brakes send signals via a cable to engage the rotors and stop the wheel. On the other hand, hydraulic disc brakes transfer the braking power to the caliper via a brake fluid.

So which is better; mechanical or hydraulic brakes? It depends on what you want. For starters, mechanical disc brakes are cheaper with less maintenance than hydraulic brakes. However, hydraulic brakes are more durable with better stopping power than mechanical disc brakes.

Whatever your preference, both mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes offer better performance than V pull and coaster brakes. It’s not even up for debate! Simply put, disc brakes are well adapted for all types of hostile environments; water, mud, debris, and heat.

Tires

The type of tires that you choose should depend on the terrain that your kid will be riding. If your child will be riding on paved roads in the neighborhood, you should go for smooth, fast-rolling tires with light tread patterns that are not too deep.

But if your kid will be riding on paved, gravel, sand, or dirt terrains, you should consider semi-slick tires that are wide with extra treads on the edges and a smoother centerline.

Otherwise, you could choose tires with big knob sizes if your kid is experienced enough to ride on off-road mountain terrain. Of course, you have to keep the air pressure low to cushion the ride and offer better traction control.

Rigid or suspension forks?

As much as suspension forks improve stability on off-road surfaces, it’s not worth it on 24-inch bikes for kids. Beyond that, most 24 inch bikes include a twist-grip or thumb shifter to change gears. As the name suggests, the twist grip is activated by twisting the handlebar grip with your palm and the thumb shifter requires you to push the lever using your thumb.

In comparison, twist grip is easier to activate but thumb shifter is ideal for off-road riding.
